Hm, just thought of something I've never really done except when grinding: using Set battle mode. I should try that in addition to whatever you folks come up with.

Set up your own rules that make the game difficult but are still reasonable by your own personal standards so as to not stress you out.

I do that a lot. Like, I play Nuzlockes but not with the standard rules. Wild battles do not kill my Pokemon and only trainer battles do. I also still put my battle mode into Shift. These are basically changes that just please me because otherwise I'd not be able to enjoy the game too much I also don't really abide to the "catch the first Pokemon in a route" rule. I basically just catch all the Pokemon available in a route and then choose the 1 among them that I have never used before.

This usually equals to joke or bad Pokemon, but since I get to choose, when I absolutely don't want to use something I'd just choose something else. I do rotations a lot too. Just imagine yourself as some anime character or something and sometimes u have to put a strong Pokemon down because of some story reasons. For me, when I find a specific Pokemon having overleveled or ruining the difficulty, I just let it rest in the PC and rotate my team regularly.

I only evolve my Pokemon before or after important battles, while imagining myself embarking in some shonen adventures where u need dramas or climaxes just to evolve. I set up customized challenges before challenging every gym. For example, 1 gym doesn't allow me to switch until I KO a Pokemon. Another gym disallows items, another wants me to bring out all my Water types, and so on.

When I can help it, I also write down stories of my journeys just to compel myself. Currently doing a Platinum run-through where my character Diamond was sent back in time after the world was destroyed by Team Galactic in the Spear Tower event within the previous timeline.

With a few self-implemented rules, you can really make a tough run for yourself. You probably don't want to do too many of these at once, but if you do, more power to you! One common way to bump up the difficulty of your playthrough is axing items being used in battle. That means no healing, no X items, no elixirs, nothing, besides held items.

If you really want to punish yourself, you can also cut out using items entirely through your run. No held items or outside of battle use, either. With this method you'll be saving yourself a ton of money for clothes and makeovers, so, there is a practical reason for it! This can be extremely tough, but items like Eviolite can help to lessen the burden somewhat.
