Motorcycle trials riding tips


















After plenty of practice, I can bunny hop over a half-dollar. Patience grasshopper. The three of us are getting numb to the huge influx of information. Mark struggles, but makes it around the loop while taking it in stride, and enjoys the challenge. He heads for the pits, and I am nearly wiped-out as well. But Roland is looking strong.

After a break, Gary takes Roland and me out to a rock outcropping for some tight off-camber practice. Roland retires a few minutes later. One thing that's quickly apparent is the amount of concentration and fitness required to ride trials.

Trials boots look similar to dual-sport or motocross boots, but trials boots are softer, 'grippier', and more flexible than motocross or off-road boots.

If you decide to stick with riding trials, a good pair of boots will make all the difference because unlike motocross or trail riding, you're standing on the footpegs the entire time you're on a trials bike. The softer sole also allows you to 'feel' the bike more than a dual-sport boot. Trials boots seem to be the most widely available component of trials apparel here in America, and Amazon sells both the Gaerne Balance boot as well as the Alpinestars Tech-T boot.

If you're a trail or motocross rider looking to try trials bikes for cross training, you should be able to use the jersey and pants you already have and buy some trials-specific apparel if you decide to stick with it.

For those with no gear trail, MX, or otherwise , you'll need to decide whether to invest in some trials gear. If you've already purchased a trials bike it's a no-brainer but if you're still deciding, the apparel isn't imperative.

Or else in the obstacles which are immediately preceded by a turn. Sloppy turning technique will make the obstacle much more difficult, because a good turn is essential to get set up properly. And if the ground is slippery or full of loose stones, a good basic turn is much safer than trying to hop the bike. The keys to good basic turns are to lean the bike into the turn with good body position so that the bike tracks through the turn and the rider is always in balance. Proper turning technique really shows itself when traction is poor, as good technique will drive the bike through the turn in total control.
